Yaxley sparkle at Great Eastern Run

Yaxley runners once again did amazing at this years Great Eastern Run on Sunday 11th October 2015

The weather was perfect as over 50 Yaxley Runners hit the streets of Peterborough for the annual local half marathon.  First home for the men in 20th position was James Mogridge in a new club record of 1.13.35. Also finishing in the top 100 and therefore helping Yaxley to the envious title of 1st local mens team were Steve Lomax 1.16.47 (54th), Simon Hearty 1.17.34 (63rd) and Mike Morley 1.20.07 (93rd).  All 4 also managed PBs on the way too.

Not to be outdone was Caroline Woods who finished in 1.28.39 and in doing so was the first local lady home, also finishing in the top 20 ladies overall.  A fantastic run considering Caroline ran a 3.17 marathon just 2 weeks earlier.

Claire Piercy was the 2nd lady home in a fantastic 1.37.54 which was a personal best by 3 minutes and shows that she is back to her best after suffering a fractured foot on the way to the pub after the clubs AGM in April.

There were too many fantastic results to mention, but well done to all runners, especially those running a half for the very first time – Anna Devine, Emily Hawke, Emily Walker, Jean Maggs, Jo Bonnet, Kate Johnstone, Katie Bevan, Mike Knight and Samantha McGrath to name a few.

And a massive thank you to all that helped out on the day, either marshalling or pacing without you all the race wouldn’t be the same.

It’s time for the Frostbite Series!

I am reaching out to all Yaxley Runners as your Club Captain to bring to your attention the up coming Frostbite series. We had a wonderful series last season with many highs and have high hopes of setting more club records in the competition.
Sunday 4th October is the first of six races in this season’s Frostbite series at Priory Park, St. Neots. Directions are available  http://www.frostbiteleague.org.uk/
The course is cross country. Trail or spikes shoes are recommended.
The Junior race starts at 10.15 and the Senior race starts 11.00
The Frostbite series is a team event entered by 16 local running clubs. You can enter as many paid up members as you like, so the more the merrier! The scoring system is based on the position that the first 10 members of the club finish, with at least 3 opposite sex. Normally this means that the first 7 men and 3 women to finish determine the score for our club. The lowest scoring team is the winner. Our members finishing outside our top ten still assist the team by finishing ahead of other clubs scoring members and so increasing the other clubs total. So for every member of another club you overtake the more our chances are improved.
The senior course is around 5 miles and the junior course around 1.5 miles.
Rules
You MUST wear a Yaxley Runners vest/t-shirt
You must NOT wear headphones
Entry is free to members as the club has paid the entry fee.
The race dates for your diary are as follows:-
4th October Priory Park, St. Neots
1st November Bushfield, Peterborough
13th December Hinchingbrook Park, Huntingdon
10th January Elm Road Sportsfield, March
7th February Bourne Woods
13th March Hinchingbrook School, Huntingdon
Last year the seniors finished 4th in the league table equalling our highest ever finish and this year we want to go at least one place better!
It would be great if we could get as many club members as possible running. If you want to run but need help with transport let me know and I will try to get something arranged
Hope to see you there

Junior Rounders

A big well done to Nina’s rounders team that won the annual rounders match at the last junior session of the season.

Amid accusations of time wasting, unsportsmanlike behaviour by Mike Morley and Ben Wright trying to take every one out with the rounders bat, Nina’s team won by either 6 – 2 or 6 – 3 (arguments still ongoing).

In other news Mike Morley has gone and purchased a howler because he is tired of losing to Joe

Same place next year guys!!!

Toms and Atherfold take top awards

Sharron Toms and Paul Atherfold were the big winners at this years presentation day, with Sharron taking the Club Runner of the Year and Paul the Club Member of the Year.

After a fantastic year for the club, with records falling and numerous personal bests throughout, the club celebrated some of these achievements at the annual presentation day held at Beaumont Way. What threatened to be a complete wash out at one point with 10 of the club huddled under a gazebo turned into a lovely summers day bathed in sunshine.

Other big winners on the day were Millie Devine (Female) and Joe Wright (Male) Junior Runners of the year with Joe also taking the Frostbite Runner of the Series as well as junior and overall winner of the now annual presenation day Howler throwing competition, beating Mike Morley into 2nd place (I feel a challenge coming on soon)!!!

Also receiving a special award on the day was Claire Piercy for all her amazing efforts over the years from race secretary of the Hampton Fun Run and Folksworth 15 to creating and updating the website on a regular basis. Thanks Claire we really do appreciate all you do…

The rest of the prize winners will be on the website within the week once all prizes have been given out.

Great performances at first 5k of the series

Wednesday 10th June saw Yaxley juniors and Seniors set some cracking times and numerous personal bests at the first of the summer 5k series at Ferry Meadows.

First home in the 3k race was Alex Devine for the boys and Rhiannon Loutit for the girls, and there were plenty of other great runs too with James Evans, Abigail Branston, Oli Smith and the 2 Maddies (Smith and Glasgow) among others having good runs with some of them taking part in their first ever race.

Meanwhile, in the 5k race 3 more juniors took the step up to compete in their first 5k race, with Josh Yeeles and Joe Wright both going sub 20 at the first attempt and Callum Atherfold setting a personal best over the distance.

First home on the night for Yaxley were James Mogridge equalling his personal best of 16.14 and Roslyn Loutit dipping under 21 minutes in a time of 20.44.

Other notable performances on the night were from Kev Peel (just missing sub 20) Paul Atherfold and Rob Smith who both smashed their bests as well as Tim Loutit, Barbara Johnson and Raj Mondair who all either just beat or were very close to best times.

All in all a great night for the club and with only 12 days to go until the next race at Eye which is the first of the club champs, some more great times are expected!!

Runners of the Bi Monthly

A big well done to James Mogridge and Anna Totterdell who were the Male and Female winners of the April / May runners of the bi-monthly.

James successfully smashed at least 2 club records in April as well as setting lots of personal bests whilst Anna set personal bests at the Marathon and 10k distances.

Well done guys, some great running

Cameron, Smith and Toms

No not a bbc sitcom, but 3 of the clubs intrepid athletes that braved north of the wall to face all that Scotland can throw at them.

Ross Cameron and Bob Smith headed up north for a nice romantic weekend for 2 away from the wives and whilst they were up there decided to take on the Edinburgh Half Marathon. After a couple of “slices” of pizza the night before and a nice double bed to share they were ready for the race.

Bob Smith came home in 2.08.05 with Ross just a couple of minutes back in 2.11.11 and a new personal best.

Also up in the Scottish Capital after her fun last weekend in the English Capital was Sharron Toms who was taking part in the full marathon, and after a tough marathon in Dover just 2 months prior Sharron ran an incredible 3.37.22 in Edinburgh to smash her personal best.
