FLYING THE FLAG rules

The "Flying the Flag" competition was the idea of Gary and began in 1997-98.
The idea is quite simple, to reward those who compete regularly in local races,
wearing their club kit and "flying the flag" for Yaxley Runners. Running capability
or distance is not a factor. The quickest runners in the club are rewarded in
other ways.

Points are awarded as follows:
1 point for any competitive race completed
1 point for competing in a club "handicap" race
1 bonus point can be earned by competing in a complete series e.g. Frostbite
Friendly league, Peterborough 5k Grand Prix series, Cambs AAA road race league
1 point for completing in special events such as the Werrington "blind 5" or the
Bushfield "Pub run". Although the series is primarily about promoting the club, exception
will be made for not wearing a club vest/shirt. The only examples are wearing a shirt
promoting your chosen charity for London Marathon, or if on holiday abroad when
you discover a local race and decide to run.

The Frostbite Friendly league

We are one of fifteen local clubs who competes in the "Frostbite Friendly League".
A series of six 5-mile races run monthly, October through March. The series originally
created by current treasurer and Yaxley resident Steve Humphries. The series also
includes junior races, over a maximum distance of 1½ miles. The age group
is 9 - 16yrs.
The current venues are:
Oct - St. Neots football club
Nov - Bushfield sports centre (Orton)
Dec - Ramsey school (same location as Ramsey 10/5 mile race)
Jan - March (near Whitemore prison)
Feb - Bourne woods
Mar - BRJ club, Huntingdon

"Frostbite" handicap race

This is based upon your performance in the Handicap series. Your average pace over
the 2.2-mile handicap distance is used to calculate your equivalent time over a
5-mile "Frostbite" race. The BRJ Huntingdon race is currently chosen, as it is the last in
the series (March), and the most compatible with the handicap course.
Both male and female awards are given for this event.

Runner of the bi-month:

In recent years the committee had selected this, but from Jun 01 it returned to being
an open club selection. The voting criterion is a very individual thing, although primarily
it is made on improved running performance. It could however be based upon the number
of events completed, a new distance achieved, the instigation of a new idea, the
organisation of a special event or simple a positive and inspiring attitude. The runner
of the year award will be based around votes received throughout the year. A voting
slip is included in the newsletter
Cross country (x/c) affiliation

In addition to affiliation to the Lincs league, there are other local x/c events including the
Parliament Hills national in which Yaxley take part. If your are interested in competing
in x/c please contact the clubs secretary.
